The Drifting Stages 壹 (2016)
Video Installation, 3D animation, Infinite loop
The Drifting Stages is a series of looping 3D animations reflecting on my experiences moving from China to the U.S. over a decade ago. The constant relocation and the extended distance from my birthplace bring forth a strong sense of instability and an increasingly obscure notion of home. The results of this contemplation are peculiar scenes of fever and ecstasy containing strobing and hallucinating props blending with trivial household objects.
This project contains downloaded 3D models from the internet alongside images of consumer goods and impressions of various events during my transition from East to West as an immigrant. The fragments of irrational and impossible structures and the accumulation of real or virtual objects lead to a surfeit of commodities. They are evidence of a continuous sojourn in a complex and “interesting” time - a time that is full of media saturation, unclear frontiers between fact and fiction, and cross-cultural and geographic travels. The work could be viewed as a celebration for living in an overheated world and our acceptance of failing to escape from it.
